Background
Cornsweeper’s development story is one sprinkled with the grace of Christ, the kindness of others and the sometimes resulting consequence of that “one more try.” Giving thanks it will see the light of day.
The “sweeper” game type was very intimidating to us as children. Computers were a luxury that you experienced “if” the I.T. class went to the lab that day and of course we had to try the games installed and not much time to necessarily learn them. A very long story short, In making a prototype for a demonstration, I thought I would try to tackle a design that I had never understood before and remix it to be approachable and accessible while combining it with elements of another game that we loved growing up (bonus points if you can guess it).
Discovery as play
At the heart of Cornsweeper is the intention of “discovery as play” or a “toy-like sense of discovery”, whichever you prefer. Contrary to modern tropes, Cornsweeper was designed with the intention of giving players room to intuit; that is, anticipate what something would do, try it, come to a conclusion and try again and see if their conclusion was correct; much like children do when learning about the world. Some would say don’t give players too much of that room to intuit or any at all, especially if you hope for many people to play and keep playing it.
In the earlier days, the boom of game development, there was a sense of the urban legend, when a player’s imagination would be included as part of the play experience; a stationary art asset in a piece of software would somehow gain its own backstory. So much of today’s fare places the player on auto-pilot, explaining every modicum, imagining for them, turning their attention into commodity, and in my opinion, speaking down to their intelligence. While there is certainly a place for hand holding and sharing instructions, too much of that, in my opinion diminishes a sense of wonder and discovery.
Cornsweeper, as homage, endeavours to pay respect to that sense of wonder and discovery. The main mechanics are briefly introduced and thereafter the player is left to discover the game and even the story on
their own.

“Cornsweeper sounds pretty interesting, and yes it's inspired by the game that gave us all a bit of anxiety in our childhood.”
